The Family of John and Anna Gertrude Cassel

John (Johannes) Cassel (1732-1815)

John Cassel was born on March 17, 1732 in Zittersheim, Alsace, Germany. When he was a child,  his family immigrated from Germany to the United States. It is belived that on September 11, 1738, John and his family arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the ship “Robert and Alice” of Dublin, Ireland (See note**). John grew up in Pennsylvania and eventually settled in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania..  

In 1763, he married Maria Gertrude in Pennsylvania. A year later, their first child, Christian was born.  John and Maria had 7 more children. They were Michael, Maria Ether, Frederick, Mary Gertrude, Eva, John and Emanuel . John and Maria spent their married lives in Dauphin County near Hummelstown, Pennsylvania. After his death in 1815, John was buried in the Old Lutheran Cemetery in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania.

(**Note:  Christian Cassel is believed to be the father of John, Michael and Frederick Cassel - HOWEVER, at this time there is no definite proof.   Chrisitian immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the ship “Robert and Alice” of Dublin, Ireland in 1738)

Anna Maria Gertrude Cassel (1732-1815)

Anna Maria Gertraut was born on February 26, 1732. In 1763, she married John Cassell in Pennsylvania. They had 8 children, Christian, Maria Esther, Frederick, Mary Gertrude, Michael, Eva, John and Emanuel. Maria and John spent their married lives in Dauphin County near Hummelstown, Pennsylvania. After her death, Maria was buried in the Old Lutheran Cemetery in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania.

(Christian - John - Christian)
1. Christian Cassel (1764-1834)

Christian was born on October 11, 1764 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.  He spent most of his childhood in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Christian married Barbara Berry around 1780 in Pennsylvania.  He and Barbara settled in Annville, Pennsylvania where they spent the rest of their lives.

According to previously published papers, Christian was an innkeeper at Annville. A public house license for him is on file around 1795 for "Millerstown" (previous name for Annville). They voted on the new township of Annville in 1800 at his one-story public house in Annville. He also supposedly had a parrot.

In 1827, Christian inherited land from his brother-in-law, Henry Berry that was to be used "for the use and benefit of his son William Cassell to be applied to his support as hereafter mentioned". This was 5 acres of land situated in Hanover Township, Dauphin Co. PA "and joining the lands of Mr. Shell, Robert Hill and others". 

Christian's wife Barbara died on November 20, 1829. Christian died of consumption 5 years later on October 12, 1834 in Annville, Pennsylvania. When he died, his estate was worth $1, 255.00, which was equally divided among his grandchildren in 1877. He was laid to rest beside his wife in the Jeruselum Reformed and Lutheran Cemetery in Annville, Pennsylvania.

2.  Maria “Esther” Cassell (1766-1836)

Esther Casssel was born on August 27, 1766 in Pennsylvania. Esther grew up in Pennsylvania.  As a young woman, she married Henry Berry. Esther and Henry lived in Annville, Pennsylvania most of their lives. Esther's husband died in 1826. Henry and Esther divided their property between his family and hers.  After her death, Esther was laid to rest in the Annville Jerusalem Church cemetery beside her husband.

Frederick Cassel was born in Pennsylvania on January 16, 1769.  In 1769 he married Esther Huber.  In 1830, Frederick was living in Hanover Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. When his sister, Esther died in 1836, he inherited $600 from her estate.  When Frederick died on March 22, 1839, he was living in or near Hummelstown, Dauhin County, Pennsylvania.  He was buried in the Zion Lutheran Church cemetery, Hummelstown, Pennsylvania.

Mary Gertrude Cassel was born on September 24, 1776 in Hanover Township, Dauphin County Pennsylvania.  She married Philip Liebrich on November 25, 1798 at the Salem Lutheran Church, Lebanon, Lebanon Co. Pa.  When her sister Esther died in 1836, she inherited $500 from her estate. Mary continued living in Pennsylvania the remainder of her life. When she died in March 23, 1860, she was living in or near Hummelstown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
