Bold Attempt to Rob the Bank
Harry Cassell attempts to Rob the Putnam County Bank
Cashier W.C. Patterson Shot
Bullet from gun grazed cashier Patterson's right arm making slight flesh wound.

Considerable excitement was occasioned this morning about 11:00, when it became known that a young man by the name of Harry Cassell had entered the Putnam County Bank and had attempted to hold up Cashier Patterson at the point of a gun. The young man had been noticed hanging about town several times the past few days acting rather suspicious and again appeared this morning and made the attempt to rob the bank. He entered the bank about 11:00, drew a gun and ordered Mr. Patterson to give him the money or hold up his hands. Will dropped below the counter but was not quick enough and the bullet fired by the robber graised his right arm near the elbow, making quite a severe bruise on his arm. The young man then turned and covering Mr. Deck, the proprietor with his revolver made his escape through the rear door of the store. The people were soon aroused and began search for ...... and apprehending the robber on the west side of the river above Bureau Creek while attempting while attempting to reach Bureau. The motive of the act was evidently robbery and Mr. Patterson can consider himself very fortunate that he escaped without more serious injury and loss of the funds of the bank. Mr. Patterson's wound is not considered dangerous and with proper care will soon be well. The young man was given a hearing before Justice Turner and committed to jail to await the action of the April Grand Jury.

Broke Jail
Sawed the bars off in the jail and made their getaway
Have not been captured. They left a note for the sheriff Pasquel and Cassell a pathetic appeal on behalf of his wife.

Sometime during Thursday night, Harry Cassell and Leonard Pisquale who were confined the Putnam County jail made their escape by sawing three irons bars off in the north window of the jail. Sheriff Cofoid locked the two prisoners in their cage at 20 minutes past six and shortly afterwards went down to attend the Woodman Lodge. At the close of the lodge he returned home and went out past the north end of the jail to the barn and emptied his slop jar but noticed nothing unusual as he returned to the house. As the prisoners had no light in the jail he did not go the jail door to see if they were in the cage but soon after retiring and was not aware of their escape until morning when Mrs. Lelia Jones informed him that the light wooden doors over the jail door was standing open. He surmised at once that the prisoners had escaped and rushed out to give the alarm. ........ The door window on the north end of the jail was secured by 1" iron bars with a heavy wire netting outside the iron bars and two thicknesses of wire mesquite netting over the screen. The prisoners sawed the two middle upright bars off close to the window sill and bent them inward and then sawed the bars off at the east and nearly through the west end of the bars so they could bent them up out of the way. Thus done it was an easy matter to make a hole through the window screen and netting and make their escape. Its pretty generally believed they had assistance from parties outside who furnished them with saws to do the work as the footprints of someone with muddy feet showed plainly where the party had stood on the large sheet iron pipe leading to the .... end of the jail to the roof. Sheriff Cofoid learned about 3:00 in the morning that two parties answering the description of the fugitives had been seen in Morance earlier that morning and immediately drove to the station where he was informed that the men were overtaken by the section crew a short distance from Morance and were taken on the hand car and carried about a mile west of House station where they left the car and went on. This is about the only clue the sheriff has had so far and he is not certain whether these fellows were the prisoners or not. Up to the time of going to press no other clue to their where about has been found but Sheriff Cofoid has sent a large number of cards to all parts of the county bearing a good likeness and the following description of Cassell. Age 23, light hair, gray eyes, height 5 ft. 8 inches, weight 160 lbs., stout, tattooed mark on the right forearm of a heart with a dagger and the name Rose. A large reward is offered by the Illinois Bankers Association and Sheriff Cofoid for the recapture of the fugitives.

Young Cassell was taken from the Princeton jail and when taken before Judge Green entered a plea of not guilty. His father employed attorney Batrum to defend his son. When court convened, the Harry Cassell case was taken up and the jury was secured shortly afternoon. The examination of the witnesses for the prosecution defense was finished early Tuesday morning and the attorneys made their pleas. The case went to jury shortly after 11:00 and after being out about 20 minutes, the jury found the defendant guilty. This morning the defense withdrew its motion for a new trial and Judge Green sentenced the prisoner to Joliet at one day's solitary confinement until discharged by due process of law. Sheriff Cofoid and father took the prisoner to Joliet this afternoon. In connection with the case, Cassell's father, Elmer Cassell endeavored to prove his son was not of age but state's attorney Ward produced a marriage license in rebuttal which proved that the young man was of age. A warrant on the charge of perjury was issued for Cassell and he was arrested by Sheriff Cofoid at 2:00 yesterday afternoon and was immediately given a preliminary hearing before Justice Turner who bound him over for the April grand jury under $500 bond. This prisoner in charge of Constable Charles Griffen drove to the country to procure bondsman and while passing through the gate, the constable ordered Cassell to get out and open the gate. After driving through the gate, he looked for his prisoner but found he had made his getaway in the dusk of the evening and up to the present time he has not been apprehended.

Benjamin Cassell had an exciting experience with a hold-up man near Peru last Friday evening that he did not enjoy. Mr. Cassell took a load of produce to Peru that day to sell and after disposing of the product, he started for home after dark. He drove along in the rain, and when he had reached a point about 200 yards south of the river bridge, a man suddenly stepped up to the wagon, and grabbed his arm and attempted to pull him from the wagon. Failing in this, the robber jumped to the spring wagon, and grappled with Mr. Cassell. In the scuffle, both men fell from the wagon to the road, Mr. Cassell underneath, while the robber endeavored to get at his pocket. Ben held the right hand pocket of his overalls containing his money in a tight grip with his right hand, and with his left succeeded in getting his knife from his pocket, but was unable to open it. All the while he was shouting vigorously, in an effort to make the bridge tender hear him. At this time, a passing auto came along, and the robber jumped up and ran toward town, disappearing in the darkness without accomplishing his purpose. Ben said the robber was a large powerful man and would undoubtedly have gotten away with his cash, had not the automobile come along when he did. Mr. Cassell said the fellow did not attempt to injure him, and he escaped with a few bruised from the fall of the wagon, and he lost his hat and his pocket knife. It is a pity Mr. Cassell failed to have a gun with him, so he could have got the robber when he was making his escape, in the light of the auto.
